Silarial wants Roiben's throne, and she will use Kaye, and any means necessary, to get it. But once back in the faerie courts, Kaye finds herself a pawn in the games of Silarial, queen of the Seelie Court. Her mother's shock and horror sends Kaye back to the world of Faerie to find her human counterpart and return her to Ironside. Miserable and convinced she belongs nowhere, Kaye decides to tell her mother the truth - that she is a changeling left in place of the human daughter stolen long ago. Now Kaye can't see or speak to Roiben unless she can find the one thing she knows doesn't exist: a faerie who can tell a lie. ![]() ![]() But when Kaye, drunk on faerie wine, declares herself to Roiben, he sends her on a seemingly impossible quest. Uneasy in the midst of the malevolent Unseelie Court, pixie Kaye is sure of only one thing - her love for Roiben. In the realm of Faerie, the time has come for Roiben's coronation. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I liked Turtle as a strong female protagonist who always had a smart reply and didn't let anything get past her. Her books are filled with humor and wit, touches of serious but not enough to traumatize the children who read her books. Jenny Holm is fast becoming one of my favorite children's authors. The only difference between grown-ups and kids is that grown-ups go to jail for murder. “Everyone things children are sweet as Necco Wafers, but I've lived long enough to know the truth: kids are rotten. Stuck in a new, unfamiliar place with kids who don't seem to want her there, Turtle must come out of her own shell to make life better. When Turtle's mother gets a new job with a woman who doesn't like kids, she's sent to Key West Florida to live with her aunt and cousins. Turtle is disillusioned by things most kids enjoy, she doesn't like Shirley Temple and she knows she's smarter than most people, adults included. ![]() I love this Key West setting with a group of kids in the 1930's. ![]() I'm reading a lot more middle grade books now for professional development, and since I had read Full of Beans and loved it a few years back, I thought I should read the book that came before it. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Squadron supreme by mark gruenwald![]() The rest of the volume is a somber examination of just how the heroes of the world would react to something like this - as you might imagine, they would do pretty much ANYthing they could, including bringing in former enemies to help. However, things were thrown for a loop when the entire world was threatened! The heroes of the Squadron Supreme (who had fought each other practically to the death a week earlier) now had to face the fact that the earth had only twelve hours left before it was destroyed! The opening of this graphic novel deals with the tragic ending of the previous Squadron Supreme maxiseries, which ended with the Squadron Supreme disbanding once they realized that their plan to fix their world through benevolent tyranny was still, well, you know, tyranny. ![]() ![]() ![]() I continue a month of "Nothing is Better" by spotlighting the way that Mark Gruenwald, Paul Ryan and Al Williamson handled the dread of the death of the universe in their gthrraphic novel sequel to their Gruenwald's classic Squadron Supreme series (that Paul Ryan finished after Bob Hall started the series). Kaaro, a government security officer who was a criminal before becoming a soldier, is a “sensitive,” a rare breed of human endowed with psychic powers. It’s 2066, and in Nigeria, the town of Rosewater has grown up around a strange dome that heals whomever stands beneath it. When a detective with psychic powers begins to investigate a mysterious sickness plaguing those like him, he uncovers sinister truths that may very well call into question the survival of the human race. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier![]() ![]() In 1931 her first novel, The Loving Spirit, was published.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Scribbled handwriting laces the inside of the letter: “You have two days to pass your audition. After being tormented daily for the next few days, amid the wreckage in his trashed home, Jamie finds a card addressed “For a Special Guy”. Jamie’s first mistake is stopping his vehicle, because now the clowns now know who he is. The next day it happens again, except there are now three clowns: one the size of an egg, one who limps with legs as skinny as straws, and one whose snarl could stop traffic, despite the cute animals printed on his shirt. Then he simply walks off the road, into the distance. Looking straight ahead in a flowery shirt, striped pants, and big red shoes, the clown’s eyes glare out of a white-painted face. Something is standing in the centre of the road. Driving home one night, Jamie is forced to slam on his brakes. He is an arts graduate who works a minimum wage job and lives in a house with a playboy and a drug addict: a twisted fairy tale, as he lightly puts it. The story is written from the perspective of Jamie, a modern twenty-two year old man living in Brisbane, Australia. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Sandman Absolute 1 by Neil Gaiman![]() ![]() What’s particularly interesting about the opening chapters is how Gaiman fits the book within the DC universe. Still, it serves to get us settled in nicely. We’re thrown into a fairly conventional narrative (by the standards of the rest of the series) seeing Dream looking to reclaim his lost kingdom and the tools of the trade as it were. There’s little hint of just who and what will become relevent later on (the answer is quite a lot). It sets up the scene and introduces us to all the key players, but in lightning fast succession. The opening arc – Preludes and Nocturnes– is probably one of the less interesting arcs of Gaiman’s magnum opus. ![]() ![]() Still, Gaiman is crafting a sort of modern fable and fairytale, and – as one of his characters reminds us – the fairy tales we tell our children today are heavily sanitized. There’s quite a lot of disturbing images and ideas thrown into the mix here – perhaps more than later on. There’s very little light or reassuring in the volume, but the lightest element Gaiman uses is quite surprising – his personification of Death as… well, a nice person. Nightmares and demons are frequent guests, but few are as evil as some of the humans we encounter. The tales call to mind some weird hybrid of Tim Burton and the Twilight Zone. ![]() 5/9/2023 0 Comments Timing by Mary Calmes![]() ![]() Stefan and Rand have been mortal enemies since the day they met, so Stefan is shocked when a temporary cease-fire sees the usual hostility replaced by instant chemistry.
